I love sci-fi that's well-grounded in reality, and for the most part PHM is just that. I also love stories where the aliens are friendly. All too often first-contact media is about immediately assuming the worst of any foreign entities, so a story about two species working together against a common threat is refreshing. Grace and Rocky are great characters.

Ha llegado al aprobado porque la premisa y su desarrollo me han volado la cabeza de lo original y bien llevado. Las ideas son súper interesantes y consigue que el discurso científico sea ameno aún cuando a veces te supere un poco (Esa sensación de "no sé de qué coño me hablas, pero a tope").
Tiene un ritmo excelente, de esos libros que saben ir de un conflicto a otro sin perder fuelle y que el hecho de que sepa aguantarte un sólo personaje durante casi 500 páginas yo lo llamo un logro.
Pero lo malo. Ai, lo malo:
-No soy yo astronauta ni científica y aún así sé que no se tocan materiales desconocidos con la piel desnuda. O que cuando entras en un ambiente desconocido antes hay que estudiarlo. O que las piezas son preciadas y no se lanzan al espacio así como así. Hay tanto comportamiento irracional en esa nave que me tenía de los nervios.
-Digo que sabe aguantar, pero la realidad es que el guasón mononeuronal del protagonista casi consigue que abandone el libro.
-El alienígena salvándolos con un deus ex machina de la ingeniería cada vez se vuelve muy increíble muy rápido.
-Casi 500 páginas y el libro pasa el test de Bechdel por una(1) unidad de diálogo hacia la mitad. Aplauso lento aquí.
-En The Martian la comandante y su equipo lo abandonan. Aquí ha decidido matarlos. La cosa es que sólo quede un señor blanco cis hetero a cualquier precio.
-El libro está escrito en un idioma que tiene género neutro, pero el alien hermafrodita es "he" toda la puta novela.
I enjoyed this work quite a bit. The only criticism I have is that at some point in the novel you reach crisis fatigue. Yes, piloting a starship based on technology that's been developed in the past year or so is going to present some issues, but it sometimes feels like it's unrelenting.

This book instantly became one of my top 10 favorites.
The humor and the science is a big draw for me. Everything is so thuroughly explained to the point where you learn while you're sucked into the world and environment. The chemistry is the most interesting that I have ever read.
Right around the half-way mark I started to fall into the world more. I was sucked in and couldnt get out. Once I finished I just stared at the page hoping that once I blinked more pages would appear; I just wanted more even though the ending was quite succinct.

Me ha encantado. Es muy entretenido y siempre están pasando cosas. El robo es desenfadado y el nivel de ciencia no es muy alto, diría que lo disfrutas si sabes de los temas pero que no es necesario para pasar un buen rato leyendo.

This is my first review of a book and is a kind of reaction to the one star commentaries that I saw. For sure I have read The Martian a while back and I can see that this book is similar, but I think a lot of people enjoy it (like I did) because of those similarities. The stereotipe of scientists from Russia, China, America and other places that set aside differences to save the world is a much needed hope that if the world is at stake we will all come together. Sure, the book is not all fairies and rainbows, the hero is actually a coward sent against is will to save humanity and in the mean time there is almost a surety that there will be wars and the usual humans in the time of an apocalypse, but the overall tone is optimistic and upbeat and is what a lot of us need sometime. So is a fast and entertaining lecture, that you maybe forget after a while what is about, but you will remember that you felt good reading it.

I think this will be the book I recommend the most this year. It is entertaining from beginning to end. If you like sci-fi or space stories, read it. If you don't, read it anyway because you will laugh. It is very rare that I tear through a book in the span of a day, but, and I apologise for the cliché, I could not put this book down.
