OK, I admit it, it's quite good

I don't think I'll ever understand how much boys love this book. I mean, it's a perfectly good book - well characterised, dramatic, evocative. I'm reading it on a promise to my 19yo son, who has, over the years, read a great many books at my behest, and fair's fair. But they read it, breath held, at the age of 12 or so, and then they hold onto it FOREVER. Their first love, their deepest relationship, their lens through which to view the world.
I wish it wasn't quite so bulky. I find the songs easier to stomach if I can work out which Victorian hymn tune they fit to. I cheerfully skip the bits written in Elvish, because it's not even a real language, and if they were saying something important, surely Tolkien would have included a translation?
But it is, I admit, quite a good book. …
